Senior Electric Utility Engineer & Business Developer
Patterson & Dewar Engineers is seeking an experienced Senior Electric Utility Engineer & Business Developer (hereafter referred to as Candidate) in Virginia or surrounding areas. The ideal Candidate is a “seller/doer” in that they will sell P&D services, provide or ensure adequate QA/QC for these services, lead the effort on and in some cases, perform these services. The Candidate will be responsible for growing business with clientele in the electric cooperative, municipal and investor-owned utility marketplace in Virginia and surrounding states. The ideal Candidate will have experience with business development and utility engineering.

Required Skills and QualificationsBusiness Development

  • Develop and maintain relationships with P&D’s existing clients in Virginia
  • Capability to cultivate and leverage strategic partnerships and relationships with potential clients
  • Grow the electric utility side of the business in Virginia and surrounding states by developing relationships with new and potential clients (electric cooperatives, municipals and IOUs) with the goal of expanding P&D’s footprint and client base.
  • Assess business landscapes and develop strategic business approaches in Virginia. This includes strategic and operating plans, goals, objectives, priorities and procedures that are in alignment with the corporate goals.
  • Direct marketing efforts including client and industry presentation and responses to RFPs
  • Learn and remain aware of the services and skills offered by all departments within the company

Technical Skills

  • 15+ years of engineering experience within the electric utilities sector of which 10+ years include performing independently in at least one of these five engineering job functions
  • Substation design, construction, testing, and commissioning of electrical substations
  • Transmission and distribution line design including route selection, line and structure spotting, structure design and analysis, material breakdown and development of construction bid packages
  • Distribution planning studies
  • Long range system studies, construction work plans, power supply studies, environmental reports, sectionalizing studies, arc hazard assessments, , to name a few
  • SMART GRID Applications including communication studies, distribution automation, transmission automation, SCADA and AMI projects
  • Distributed Energy development including, distributed generation impact studies, solar installation, battery energy storage, microgrids and wind energy.
  • Perform calculations, analysis, and evaluations necessary to complete assignments
  • Proficient with the systems, programs and applications used to complete assignments
  • Maintain current and working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (i.e. RUS, NESC, FEMA, IEEE)
  • Expand knowledge and technical skills to keep up with advancements in the electric utility industry and meet the future needs of clients

Qualifications

  • A BS in Electrical, Civil or Mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited university
  • 15+ years of experience in electric utility transmission and distribution line design
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and honestly, both written and verbal, to clients and colleagues
  • The ability and willingness to travel approximately 50% annually
  • The ability and willingness to work extended hours to meet project deadlines
  • The ability to sell services, follow through on requests and execute on commitments
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Integrity – the P&D way of doing business and as a professional engineer
  • Knowledge – utility systems, power line design, leadership
  • Service-oriented attitude
  • Initiative, self-sufficiency, and a strong desire to learn and train others
  • Attention to safety and the welfare of co-workers and clients
  • Proficiency with Microsoft® Office (required), and Office 365 and SharePoint (preferred)

The Candidate may be asked to work extended hours occasionally to meet project deadlines. Candidates must pass a background check prior to employment.
